Perched on the dramatic oceanfront bluffs of La Jolla, CA, the UC San Diego Theatre District Living & Learning Neighborhood (TDLLN) addresses a critical challenge in modern campus design: fostering student success in an era of increasing loneliness and anxiety. As the university’s newest residential college, the project takes a holistic approach to student well-being—physically, mentally, and academically—by creating environments that promote connection, health, and achievement. This $565 million mixed-use development transforms the student experience, encouraging collaboration, leadership, and innovation in a diverse and interconnected world.
Designed as a welcoming gateway, TDLLN unifies diverse programs into a dynamic and inclusive neighborhood. Spanning 10 acres, it includes 2,000 undergraduate beds, classrooms, a meeting center, Market Hall, and retail spaces. Its proximity to renowned performing arts venues like the La Jolla Playhouse strengthens campus-community ties, enriching student life and fostering meaningful interactions among students, faculty, and neighbors.
This ambitious Design-Build project was realized through a collaboration between HKS Architects, EYRC Architects, Kitchell Contractors, and SWA Group. Together, they have created a vibrant and sustainable addition to the UC San Diego campus.
