Their fridge provides free food and other essential goods for the area and is located under the entry canopy of the Hot and Cool Café.
The fridge sits in the heart of Leimert Park and has become an indispensable resource for many people. As the success of the fridge grew, our Design Justice Committee reached out to create more substantial storage along with a shade structure to defend the donations from the elements – Leimert Park Community Fridge agreed.
Together with the fridge organizers, we hosted a collaborative design competition within the firm to generate the best design for their needs. After a design was chosen, our team refined the structure with feedback from the organizers.
Then, we began fabrication of the structure in our (socially distanced) EYRC woodshop over the weekends during the entire month of January. Installed on February 7th, the fridge structure was immediately welcomed by the community. Local artists have already begun to make the structure their own and we can’t wait to see how it evolves.
